Did you know, handwashing is considered the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, yet many people still don't wash their hands as often or as thoroughly as they should.

Why is Handwashing Important?

Our hands come into contact with countless surfaces every day, from doorknobs and grocery carts to our own faces and phones. These surfaces can harbor a variety of germs, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When we touch these surfaces and then touch our eyes, nose, or mouth, we can easily transfer these germs to our bodies and become sick.

Proper handwashing can remove up to 90% of germs from our hands, significantly reducing our risk of contracting illnesses such as the common cold, influenza, and gastrointestinal infections. It can also help to prevent the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

How to Wash Your Hands Properly

To effectively wash your hands, follow these simple steps:

  1. Wet your hands thoroughly with clean, running water.
  2. Apply soap to your hands, preferably liquid, bar, or antibacterial soap.
  3. Lather your hands together vigorously, rubbing all surfaces of your hands, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers, under your nails, and around your wrists.
  4. Continue rubbing your hands together for at least 20 seconds.
  5. Rinse your hands thoroughly under clean, running water, ensuring all soap is removed.
  6. Dry your hands completely with a clean towel or air dryer.

Additional Precautions to Take

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and dispose of the tissue properly.
  • If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
